I absolutely love this. The reference to Barstow brought me back to my Army days at Fort Irwin ('83-'84). Loved that the Whistle Stop McDonalds was, at one time, the busiest McDonalds in the world (primarily because it was the perfect halfway stop between LA and Vegas, bladder-wise).
I'd love to go to Roswell. Too, I'd love to visit some of the Civil War sites I've not yet visited out there, such as Glorieta Pass, Fort Union, and Valverde. I've been to Pacheco Peak in Arizona.
I do love how you frame this story so well...change right before our eyes and all. Thanks.
What fun to have discovered this podcast of yours. Love this story and look forward to May to hear about your present journey. Traveling Mercies!

Oooohhhh I can't wait to hear more about this trip. I so love the Southwest. Safe travels, dear friend!!!
Thank you so much! Hope to see you at Hindman in July!

Thanks for reading and for the props, Joe. And for the tips about Civil War sites!
My parents' first home was way out in the desert--Hinkley. If that rings a bell, Hinkley is where Erin Brockovich fought for justice on behalf of folks who were poisoned by PG&E. https://grist.org/Array/the-true-story-of-the-town-behind-erin-brockovich/
Very cool. And if you watch the movie Hair with Treat Williams, scenes in the second half were filmed in Barstow and Ft. Irwin.
